Since these elements in their monatomic state do
not respond to intrumental methods of analysis a wet chemical separation must be done. The sample
is dissolved and oxidized in strong acids.
Then each element is precipitated, dried and
weighed as the oxide (gravimetric analysis). From this the amount of pure element is calculated and
reported above. This short cut test can take up to three days giving a close
approximation.
* Iridium may be high or undeterminable if
calcium or silica is high, and presence of iron may cause high rhodium
results.
**A more accurate determination to avoid these
problems takes up to two weeks.
